How long does it take to self-publish a children's picture book?
Plan on about 7 months from a finished draft to launch day if you print on demand with Amazon KDP or IngramSpark, and about 9 to 10 months if you use offset printing. A fast, well-organized project can be done in about 5 months; a relaxed one can take a year. Illustration is almost always the longest step.
| Stage | Typical time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Finalize the manuscript | 8 to 12 weeks | Revisions, beta-reader feedback, professional editing. Add about 4 weeks for a bilingual translation. |
| Illustrations | 10 to 20 weeks | Character designs, rough sketches, color drafts, final art. |
| Layout and cover design | 2 to 6 weeks | Interior layout, cover, print-ready files. |
| Website (optional) | 2 to 5 weeks | Domain, author site, pre-order or buy links. Runs alongside other steps. |
| Publishing and printing | 1 week (KDP), 1 to 2 weeks (IngramSpark), 10 to 14 weeks (offset) | File review, proof copies, and for offset: production, shipping and customs. |
What slows most first-time authors down
- Starting illustration before the text is final. Text changes after sketches mean redrawn spreads.
- Waiting to hire an illustrator. Good illustrators are often booked months ahead.
- Skipping the proof copy. Colors and margins look different in print, and a second proof round adds 1 to 2 weeks.
- Picking a launch date first. Work backward from the date with realistic ranges, then pick the date.

Common questions
How long does it take to self-publish a children's picture book?
Most first-time authors need about 7 months from a finished draft to launch day when they print on demand with Amazon KDP or IngramSpark, and about 9 to 10 months when they use offset printing. A fast, well-organized project can finish in about 5 months; a relaxed one can take a year.
What takes the longest?
Illustration. A professional illustrator usually needs 10 to 20 weeks for a 32-page picture book, working through character designs, rough sketches, color drafts and final art. Book your illustrator early, because good illustrators are often booked months ahead.
How long does Amazon KDP take to publish a paperback?
KDP usually reviews and publishes a paperback within 24 to 72 hours. Allow a full week in your plan for file fixes, ordering a proof copy and any manual review.
Is offset printing worth the extra time?
Offset printing adds about 10 to 14 weeks for proofs, printing, shipping and customs, but the cost per copy is much lower once you print a few hundred books or more. It makes sense if you plan to sell to bookstores, schools or at events.
When should I start marketing my picture book?
Start at least 2 to 3 months before launch: share the cover and illustration previews, build an email list and line up reviewers, bookstores and school visits. If you already have a launch date, switch the timeline above to "I need it out by" to see when each step has to begin.
