About Katrina Liu – Independent Children's Book Author and Self-Publishing Coach
Hi! I'm Katrina Liu, a Chinese-American and Taiwanese mom of three based in San Francisco, California. I'm the founder of Lychee Press, where I create Chinese bilingual children's books and stories that reflect Asian American families.
Like many children of immigrants, I grew up in the 80s and 90s feeling the pressure to fit in. I attended a mostly white elementary school and distanced myself from my culture. I stopped speaking Chinese at home and didn't appreciate my heritage until much later in life.
As a child, I was always creating—drawing storybooks, writing poems, filming short videos, and crafting friendship bracelets. That love for creativity led me to study graphic and web design. My first job out of college was with a small publishing company. I eventually transitioned into the tech world, earned my MBA, and built a career in product management in Silicon Valley.
Then I became a mom.
Reading bedtime stories with my oldest daughter rekindled my love for children's books. I wanted her to grow up proud of her identity and connected to her culture. I also wanted to give her the opportunity to be bilingual, something I had pushed away as a child and always regretted.
Now, as a mom of three—including two daughters and one son—I'm even more committed to creating books that matter. Books that help children feel seen, valued, and connected to their roots.
Why I Write Bilingual Chinese Children's Books
I write Chinese-English bilingual picture books designed for families who are not fluent in Chinese but want their kids to grow up with language exposure and cultural pride. My books use Simplified or Traditional Chinese, Pinyin, and English, along with Mandarin audio read-alouds to help with pronunciation.
Language acquisition is most effective during early childhood. My books are meant to support parents who want to raise bilingual kids, even if they're learning alongside them.
But these books are not just about language. They are about seeing Asian faces in everyday stories, about celebrating identity, and about encouraging kids to be proud of who they are.
Self-Funded and Purpose-Driven
Every book I create is independently published and self-funded. This work is personal to me and driven by passion. If you believe in the power of Asian representation in children's books or want to support dual language learning, I hope you'll share my books with your family, school, or community.
